Every year on Earth Day, we stop to celebrate individuals and organizations that are doing their part and more, to protect our planet’s future.
While these efforts are worth applauding, they must be sustained to make a difference.
IBM has been firmly committed to environmental leadership for over four decades, and we have produced a record of significant results. Our company has aggressively reduced greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions since 1990. We’ve also had an annual worldwide energy conservation goal since 1996.
And from 1990 through 2014, we saved 6.8 million megawatt-hours (MWh) of electricity, avoided 4.2 million metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and saved $550 million through energy conservation actions.
Last month, IBM received a Climate Leadership Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions (C2ES), and The Climate Registry. This marked the fourth award since the program launched in 2012 and we are the first recipient to win an award in each of the four award categories recognizing individual organizations.
What’s next? IBM is working toward its third-generation GHG emissions reduction goal through continued focus on energy conservation and greater use of renewable electricity in our operations.
Environmental sustainability is a global imperative for both present and future generations, and IBM has long recognized that doing what is good for the environment is also good for business. We take our commitment to the environment seriously, and will continue to focus on ways we can reduce our own operational impact on climate as well as helping our clients do likewise.
